Augmentative and Alternative Communication evaluations, consultations,

and training to school districts and families across New Jersey.

Assistive Technology

Assistive technology (AT) refers to tools, devices, software, and other resources that are specifically designed to support students with disabilities or learning challenges. The primary goal of assistive technology in schools is to enhance the educational experience and facilitate the participation of students in various academic and social activities.

Integrating assistive technology into the school setting is part of creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment, ensuring that students with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities. TechAbilities Consulting's Assistive Technology Evaluations aim to select technology tailored to individual student needs.

Examples and applications of assistive technology in the school setting:

For students with reading difficulties or visual impairments, text-to-speech software can read aloud digital text, making it more accessible.

Conversely, speech-to-text tools can assist students who struggle with writing by converting spoken words into written text.

Screen reading software is designed to read aloud the content displayed on a computer screen, making digital information accessible to students with visual impairments.

Students with motor impairments may benefit from alternative keyboards, mice, or touchscreens designed to accommodate different physical abilities.

These tools assist students in organizing and visualizing information, which can be particularly helpful for those with attention or organizational challenges.

Providing materials in audio format or as electronic books allows students with reading difficulties or visual impairments to access content more effectively.

Augmentive & Alternative Communication

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to a set of strategies and tools designed to support individuals with communication impairments or challenges. AAC systems are utilized when traditional forms of communication, such as speech or writing, are limited or not possible. These systems can be temporary or permanent, and they aim to enhance or replace existing communication methods.

The choice of AAC and access methods depends on the specific needs, abilities, and preferences of the individual. A comprehensive assessment by TechAbilities Consulting, in collaboration with the student’s related services providers, teachers, and family, is conducted to determine the most appropriate AAC system and access method for each person. The goal is to empower individuals with communication challenges, enabling them to express themselves effectively and participate more fully in various aspects of life.

Some AAC Strategies and equipment may include the use of communication boards with symbols or pictures, text-to-speech devices, or speech-generating devices.

Access methods are by which means the individuals interact with and control AAC devices. The appropriate access method is determined based on the individual's physical abilities, motor skills, and sensory capabilities. Various methods taken into consideration during AAC Evaluations are Direct Selection, scanning, switch access, and eye gaze.

Training & Consultation

Training and consultation play a pivotal role in ensuring the effective implementation, carryover, and generalization of Assistive Technology (AT) and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) in both school and home settings. TechAbilities Consulting’s training and consultation services maximize the impact of the recommended technologies on the lives of individuals with academic and communication challenges. Here's why:

Training sessions offer professionals, caregivers, and educators the opportunity to develop a thorough understanding of  the recommended AT and AAC tools. While consultation services bridge the gap between theory and application. Through collaborative consultations,TechAbilities Consulting works closely with educators and families to assess the specific needs of individuals. This personalized approach ensures that AT and AAC solutions are carefully tailored, promoting effective implementation in both educational and home environments.

Consistency is key for the successful implementation of AT and AAC. Training provides a standardized understanding, ensuring that everyone involved, from educators to parents, is on the same page. This consistency fosters a supportive and communicative environment for the individual, whether at school or at home.

Consultation services facilitate collaboration among educators, therapists, and parents. This collaborative approach ensures a cohesive strategy for the implementation of AT and AAC, promoting continuity in the individual's communication support across various environments.
